Move from Brevo

Export your Brevo contacts and blocklist, bring your email designs across, rebuild your automations, and tidy up Brevo's DNS records.

On this page›

This page takes you from Brevo to a working IGSendMail account. Contacts and the blocklist take about 20 minutes. Email designs and automations take longer, depending on how many you have.

Do it in this order

Set up your sending domain first, because DNS changes can take a few hours. Keep Brevo running until your first IGSendMail campaign has gone out, so there's never a gap.

What comes across, and what doesn't#

From BrevoHow it movesTime
Contacts, with the attributes you chooseExport a CSV, import it into a listMinutes
Blocklisted contacts (unsubscribes, hard bounces, complaints)Filter, export, import into your BlacklistMinutes
Custom-code templatesCopy the code, paste into a new templateA few minutes each
Drag-and-drop templatesBrevo doesn't export these as HTML; copy a test email's source or rebuild15 to 60 minutes each
AutomationsShare links only work between Brevo accounts; rebuild each one20 to 60 minutes each

Step 1: Set up your sending domain#

Go to Sending domains, add the domain you send from, and publish the DNS records it shows you. Authenticate your domain walks through each record.

Once Brevo has sent its last email, remove Brevo's records: the TXT "Brevo code", Brevo's DKIM records, and include:spf.brevo.com if it's in your SPF record. Check your DMARC record too. Brevo's automatic setup can replace an existing DMARC record, and it may send reports to rua@dmarc.brevo.com; change that to an address you read.

Step 2: Export your contacts#

Select everyone

In Brevo, go to CRM > Contacts. With no list, segment or filter loaded, tick the checkbox in the CONTACT column, then click Select all contacts. You need the "Export contacts" permission.

Choose what to export

Click More actions > Export. Brevo only exports the attributes you tick, so tick at least EMAIL, FIRSTNAME and LASTNAME, plus every custom attribute you use. To keep list membership, tick System data > List ID. Choose comma as the separator.

Download the file

The file appears under the bell icon (notifications). You can also have a download link emailed, but it only goes to the account owner.

Step 3: Import your contacts#

Create the list and its fields

Go to Lists and create a list. Add a field under ListsFields for each attribute you exported. If you exported List ID and want to keep the difference between lists, add a text field for it.

Import and map

Import the file and map each column to its field. Import contacts covers the mapping screen and the import summary. Blocklisted contacts in this file won't be emailed once you've done step 4.

Plan size

The Free plan holds 2,500 contacts. Every paid plan has unlimited contacts, so if your list is bigger than that, choose a paid plan before you import.

Step 4: Bring your blocklist across#

Brevo keeps unsubscribes, hard bounces, spam complaints and manual blocks together in its email campaign blocklist.

  1. In CRM > Contacts, choose Add filter > Email > Email campaigns subscriptions > Blocklisted.
  2. Select all the filtered contacts and export them, with EMAIL as the first column.
  3. In IGSendMail, go to Blacklist and import the file. The Blacklist import reads the email address from the first column.

Don't skip this. Emailing someone who unsubscribed from you on Brevo earns spam complaints and may break the law. Blacklisted addresses are never emailed, from any list. Blacklist and suppression explains how it works.

Step 5: Move your email designs#

Templates built in Brevo's HTML code editor. Open the template and copy the code. In IGSendMail, create a new template, choose your own HTML, and paste it in.

Drag-and-drop templates. Brevo only shares these with other Brevo accounts and doesn't export their HTML. Two options:

  • Copy a test email. Send yourself a test, open it in your mail app, view the source or original message, and copy the HTML. Paste it into a new HTML template, then remove Brevo's footer and logo.
  • Rebuild it in the email builder. Most newsletters are a header, a few content blocks and a footer, which takes about 15 minutes.

Then replace Brevo's merge tags. {{ contact.FIRSTNAME }} won't work here; insert tags with the editor's personalization control, as described in Personalization tags. Check the footer has your unsubscribe link and postal address.

Step 6: Rebuild your automations#

Brevo automations can only be shared with other Brevo accounts, so each one is rebuilt by hand. Before you start, open each workflow and write down (or screenshot):

  1. What starts it: a contact added to a list, an attribute or date, an event.
  2. Each email and the wait before it. Copy each email while you're there.
  3. Any conditions or branches.

Then build it under Automations. Build a workflow covers the editor and Welcome series is a worked example. If a workflow starts from a store event such as an abandoned cart, see Abandoned cart recovery.

Switch each automation on here only when you switch the Brevo one off, so nobody gets the same email twice.

Step 7: Before your first send#

  • Verify the list. Old lists always contain dead addresses. Run email verification before your first campaign.
  • Start with your most engaged people. Your domain is new to our servers, so send to recent openers first and build up over a week or two. Warm up a new domain has a schedule.
  • Replace your signup forms with an IGSendMail form, or new subscribers will keep landing in Brevo.
  • Transactional email: if your site sends receipts or password resets through Brevo, move those too before you close the account. See Transactional email.
