Move from Kit (ConvertKit)

Export your Kit subscribers and tags, bring unsubscribed, bounced and complained subscribers across, and rebuild your sequences and visual automations.

On this page›

This page takes you from Kit (formerly ConvertKit) to a working IGSendMail account. Subscribers and suppressions take about 20 minutes. Sequences and visual automations take longer, depending on how many you have.

Export before you delete anything

Deleting a Kit account erases everything within a day or two, and export links expire after 5 days. Export first, and keep Kit running until your first IGSendMail campaign has gone out.

Step 1: Set up your sending domain#

Go to Sending domains, add the domain you send from, and publish the DNS records it shows you. Authenticate your domain walks through each record.

If you verified a custom sending domain in Kit, it added its own SPF and DKIM records. Remove them once Kit has sent its last email, but keep your DMARC record. A domain may only have one SPF record, so add our include to the existing record rather than creating a second one.

Step 2: Export your subscribers#

Select all confirmed subscribers

In Kit, go to Subscribers, set the Status dropdown to Confirmed subscriber, tick the checkbox in the header, then click Select all. Check it now says "Deselect all"; otherwise only the current page is selected.

Export

Click the ⋮ menu and choose Export. The file includes first name, email, status, tags and custom fields.

Download it

Kit emails a download link to the account owner, and it also appears in your notifications. The link expires after 5 days.

Export the other statuses

Repeat with the Status dropdown set to Unsubscribed, then Bounced, then Complained. You'll use these files in step 4.

Kit's segments are rules, not a column in the export. To keep one, either export it separately (open the segment and use the same bulk export) and add a field for it, or note its rules and rebuild it here.

Step 3: Import your subscribers#

Create the list and its fields

Go to Lists and create a list. Add a field under ListsFields for each custom field you exported, and a text field called Tags.

Import and map

Import the confirmed file and map each column to its field. Map tags to your Tags field and you can build segments on it, for example "Tags contains Customer". Import contacts covers the mapping screen and the import summary.

Plan size

The Free plan holds 2,500 contacts. Every paid plan has unlimited contacts, so if your list is bigger than that, choose a paid plan before you import.

Step 4: Bring your suppressions across#

Go to Blacklist and import the unsubscribed, bounced and complained files one at a time. The Blacklist import reads the email address from the first column, so move the email column to the front first if it isn't there already.

Don't skip this. Emailing someone who unsubscribed from you on Kit earns spam complaints and may break the law. Blacklisted addresses are never emailed, from any list. Blacklist and suppression explains how it works.

Step 5: Move your email designs#

Custom HTML templates. Open the template's code editor in Kit, copy the code, and paste it into a new IGSendMail template using your own HTML. Remove Kit's required tags as you go: {{ message_content }} marks where the email body goes, and {{ unsubscribe_url }} and {{ address }} are replaced by IGSendMail's own unsubscribe link and your postal address.

Broadcasts built in Kit's editor have no HTML export. Rebuild them in the email builder. Most are a header, a few content blocks and a footer, which takes about 15 minutes.

Then replace Kit's Liquid merge tags. {{ subscriber.first_name | default: "there" }} and {% if subscriber.tags contains "..." %} won't work here; insert tags with the editor's personalization control, as described in Personalization tags, and use a segment where you used a tag condition.

Step 6: Rebuild your sequences and automations#

Kit can only share automations with other Kit accounts, so each one is rebuilt by hand.

  • Sequences are the easy part: an ordered set of emails, each with a delay. Copy each email with its delay and any day-of-week rule.
  • Visual automations: write down the entry point (a form, a tag, a purchase), each step, and each condition.

Then build them under Automations. A Kit tag or form entry point becomes a tag or list trigger here; see Triggers and timing. Build a workflow covers the editor, and Welcome series is a worked example.

Switch each automation on here only when you switch the Kit one off, so nobody gets the same email twice.

Step 7: Before your first send#

  • Verify the list. Old lists always contain dead addresses. Run email verification before your first campaign.
  • Start with your most engaged people. Your domain is new to our servers, so send to recent openers first and build up over a week or two. Warm up a new domain has a schedule.
  • Replace your forms and landing page signups with IGSendMail forms, or new subscribers will keep landing in Kit.
  • Selling through Kit? Kit Commerce products and paid newsletters don't move to IGSendMail; keep them on another platform before you close the account.
